Watch Your Time!

Posted 2010-04-23 14:49:14 UTC

We all want to accomplish so much for ourselves and our children. However, please be very careful about over scheduling your child. One scheduled activity a week is plenty for most students. So, joining a soccer team is great and will keep your child active, but joining a soccer team, taking karate, being on another team, and studying an instrument that requires additional lessons outside of school each week is too much. Remember, do fewer time consuming commitments but let your child succeed at them by giving your child the time to do each well.

Outdoor fun and learning!

Get your family moving outside on these gorgeous weather days!
Challenge the kids to a game of "horse" in basketball and each time someone gets a letter, do a math problem with sidewalk chalk or have them write one sentence of a paragraph with the chalk. They will have fun and learn at the same time!

The single best way to improve your vocabulary is to read a variety of material with a dictionary at your side. When you come to a new word and you can't figure it out by the clues the author gives you, look it up. Then think of a creative way to remember the word so that it stays with you. For example, if the word is aqueduct, think of a duck controlling water flowing from a pipe. The definition sounds like the words duck and aqua means water, so it will stay with you. Also, put in your search engine on your computer the words "Greek and Latin Prefixes" and use the sites that come up to learn the meanings of these word parts. By knowing “sub” means under and “terra” means earth, you will know that a subterranean animal lives or burrows beneath the earth. A great site is “Quia” for this skill as well as “Race to Ramses”.
Have fun!

Apply what you learn!

When you learn, remember to apply it to the world around you, whether it be math, social studies,or any subject. For example, if you learn the Pythagorean Theorem, use it to figure height of your house or how long that string of holiday lights has to be to fully hang from the top of a tree to point on the ground.
